The Contarini Fountain is an important symbol of the city and it is located in the centre of Piazza Vecchia, an important historical and touristic site in the Upper Town. This fountain was an important donation ordered by the podestà Alvise Contarini, at the time of the Venetian republic, with the aim of guaranteeing water supplies for the inhabitants of Bergamo even during periods of drought. It is made of white Zandobbio marble, and it features a structure composed of a central basin supported by four lions, which let the water flow out. The fountain is enhanced by sculpted decorative elements, including coats of arms and ornamental patterns.
It is one of the main attractions of Piazza Vecchia, and one of the most evocative and popular places to visit in the Upper Town of Bergamo.
