The natural beauty of Bergamo: the best parks in the city and its surroundings
18 March 2024
Located between the Po Valley and the foothills of the Alps, the city of Bergamo will capture your heart – not only because of its thousand-year history and fascinating architecture, but also because of its incomparable natural beauty.
Among Bergamo’s hidden treasures there are its parks, oases of peace and serenity that offer both residents and visitors a regenerating retreat from the chaos of urban life.
Let’s discover together some of the most beautiful parks that Bergamo has to offer.
Bergamo Parks to visit
Caprotti Park
Bergamo’s Caprotti Park is a green oasis in the heart of the city. Located close to the historic centre, this hidden park is perhaps the most beautiful in the city, and it is a precious ‘green lung’ as well. Its meadows and paths dotted with ancient trees and thriving bushes are an invitation to relaxing walks and moments of contemplation. Thanks to its picnic areas, it is possible to completely lose yourself in the beauty of nature and forget for a moment the hustle and bustle of our everyday life.
The park is open every day, from 8 am to 8 pm. But the Caprotti Park is not just a place to relax: it is also an important cultural and recreational space. Its equipped areas are home to art events, concerts, theatre performances and cultural events. Furthermore, the park is enriched by various artistic installations and monuments that narrate the history and traditions of Bergamo, creating a tangible link between the present and the past of the city.
Suardi Park
The Suardi Park in Bergamo is located near the historic centre, a few steps from the Gamec gallery and from the Carrara Academy. Its origins date back to the 19th century, when it was designed as a public garden for the citizens of Bergamo, although its official foundation date is the year 1950, which makes it the oldest park in Bergamo. It is a popular place for people of all ages. Among the park’s main attractions there is its charming pond, populated by ducks and swans swimming placidly among the water lilies. Along the banks of the pond there are some scenic benches, ideal for enjoying moments of quiet and contemplation.
During the warm season, the Suardi Park comes alive with cultural events such as open-air concerts, theatre performances and art exhibitions. It is also the ideal place for children – here they can have fun on slides and swings, and there is a toy car track with cars that children can drive themselves. In winter it is open from 7 am to 7 pm, while in spring and summer opening hours are extended until 10 pm. Nearby there are two other Bergamo parks: Marenzi Park, an ancient private garden belonging to the noble Marenzi family bearing the same name, and Galgario Park.
Trucca Park
With its picturesque pond, its memorial forest, its wooden bridges crossing serpentine streams and a great variety of colourful plants and flowers, the Trucca Park in Bergamo is a true green jewel, located near the Pope John XXIII Hospital.
With its 193,000 square metres, it is the largest park in Bergamo and the ideal destination for a romantic walk or a morning yoga session, as well as being very popular with runners. There is also a large area dedicated to our pets, and a children’s playground.
Rocca and Orobic Fauna Park
Surrounded by the impressive city walls of Bergamo, this park offers a unique combination of history and nature. History lovers can explore the ruins of the Rocca, the ancient fortress, while nature lovers can walk among the ancient trees and enjoy the view of the city below.
Located in the Upper Town, it is adjacent to the Rimembranze Park, which is an important place of peace and reflection. Here, visitors can take time to honour the memory of those who fell in the two world wars. The park also houses a number of war relics, including a tank.
Turani Park
Turani Park in Redona is located in the neighbourhood bearing the same name, and it is characterised by large green areas, trees and many facilities such as picnic areas, playgrounds and areas for children.
It is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with your family and admire the many small animals that live in the pond, such as turtles, swans, ducks, etc. Inside there is also a pulley that allows you to experience a bit of adrenaline.
Goisis Park
Located in a large green area near the Monterosso neighbourhood in Bergamo, we will find this beautiful park set against the Maresana hill and equipped with many attractions. Inside there is an extensive fitness trail for sports and fitness enthusiasts, and a roller-skating rink, covered and sheltered.
There are also paved driveways with mini road signs to teach the little ones, on their little electric cars, the first concepts of road safety. There are children’s playgrounds and, above all, given the presence of a large adjacent car park and of a pleasant breeze in the evenings, various street food events are held here in the open air during the summer, with the possibility of dining al fresco.
Colli Park
Actually, it should not be seen or thought of as a normal ‘city park’ because it is instead a vast area, the third largest in Lombardy, and it is situated on the slopes of the hills surrounding the city, and even Monte Canto Alto – 1146 m – descends to it.
The 5,000-hectare Colli Park in Bergamo, which was founded back in the year 1977, offers awe-inspiring views of the city and its surrounding mountains. With wide meadows, well-shaded paths and beautiful forests, this park is the perfect place for a relaxing walk or a family picnic. From the top of its cliffs, visitors can also enjoy breathtaking sunsets, over the city below and far beyond
